What caught our eye: Florida strawberries run on three different clocks — and two of them just ran out

A genuinely useful piece of garden news landed October 24: in Florida, strawberries are a fall planting, not a spring one, and the right date depends on where you live. Citing the UF/IFAS strawberry production calendar, Complete Gardening notes the commercial window ran through October 15 in North Florida and through October 25 in Central Florida, while South Florida’s window — October 1 through November 1 — is still open; broader UF/IFAS home-garden guidance puts the general Florida planting period from late September to early November. The lesson travels well beyond Florida: planting windows are local, they close quietly, and missing one doesn’t have to mean missing the crop. If your outdoor window has shut, take the berries inside — the Wild Strawberry Plant Pods 3-pack ($14.95) grows smaller, sweeter fruit under lights, the Smart Garden 3 is the compact countertop way to run those pods, and the Smart Garden 9 gives you nine pods when three turns out not to be enough. Check your own region’s calendar first — then plant something anyway, indoors or out.
