Grow Lights & Indoor Growing
The winter gardener’s department. A decent light setup turns a basement shelf into a nursery in February and a salad bar in January — but the lighting aisle is full of purple-glowing overkill. Here’s what the plants actually need.
What plants actually need from a light
Three things. The rest is packaging.
Intensity
Inches away, not feet
Seedlings want the light close. Adjustable hangers matter more than wattage bragging — if you can’t raise it as they grow, you bought the wrong fixture.
Spectrum
Plain white is fine
Full-spectrum white LEDs grow seedlings just fine. The purple ‘blurple’ panels are a relic; your eyes and your plants both prefer white.
Consistency
Same hours, every day
Fourteen to sixteen hours a day, consistent. Plants run on routine — and so will you, once the timer handles it.

A timer beats your memory
The cheapest high-impact purchase in this whole department is a basic outlet timer. It gives your seedlings the same photoperiod every day without you remembering, and it costs less than the packet of seeds under the light. Buy the timer before you upgrade the fixture.
Distance is the whole game
Leggy seedlings are almost always a distance problem, not a bulb problem. Keep the light two to three inches above the tops and raise it as they grow — chains and S-hooks, not a fixed shelf. When the seedlings stay short and stocky, the setup is right.
Good to know
Do I need an expensive “grow light”?
No. A basic full-spectrum LED shop light, hung close on adjustable chains, grows seedlings as well as fixtures costing many times more. Spend on adjustability and a timer before you spend on branding.
How long should the lights be on?
Fourteen to sixteen hours a day for seedlings, on a timer for consistency. Plants need a dark period too — don’t run them around the clock.
Can I grow food indoors all winter?
Leafy greens and herbs do well under lights through winter; fruiting crops like tomatoes want far more intensity and space than a shelf setup delivers. Start with salads and herbs — they’re the honest win.

Feit Electric 4 ft. 120-Watt 5000K Daylight 12000 Lumens White Integrated LED Linkable Hanging Shop Light Fixture with Pull Chain (Model SHOP/4/HO/850)
Why we picked it: Twelve thousand lumens of full-spectrum white light in a 4-foot fixture — the kind of bright, even coverage seedling shelves actually need. Hang it inches above the trays and raise it as plants grow; the linkable design means one plug can run a whole row. If you’re done with leggy windowsill seedlings, this is the fixture that fixes it.

Intermatic 15 Amp 24-Hour Indoor Plug-In Timer, White (Model TN311K)
Why we picked it: Seedlings want 14 to 16 hours of light on the same schedule every day, and no one remembers to flip a switch that reliably. This mechanical 24-hour timer holds the photoperiod for you — set the pins once and forget it. It’s the cheapest automation in the grow room, and the plants can tell the difference.

Everbilt #1 x 10 ft. Zinc Plated Steel Double Loop Chain (Model 803062)
Why we picked it: Seedling lights need to move up weekly as plants grow, and zinc-plated chain is the simple, strong way to hang them. Cut it to length, pair it with S-hooks, and adjusting height takes seconds. Ten feet covers a shelf with room to spare — the unglamorous hardware that makes the whole system work.

Everbilt 1/8 in. x 1-1/4 in. Zinc-Plated Rope S-Hook (4-Pack) (Model 44354)
Why we picked it: The fastest way to raise and lower a hanging light is a hook, not a knot — these small zinc S-hooks make height adjustments a ten-second job. Four to a pack, which covers a two-fixture shelf. Cheap, rust-resistant, and the detail that keeps you actually adjusting the lights instead of putting it off.

HDX Steel Wire 5-Shelf Adjustable Garage Storage Shelving Unit in Black (36 in. W x 72 in. H x 18 in. D) (Model HD183672-5BPS)
Why we picked it: A 36-inch wire rack that moonlights as a grow stand — the shelves adjust as seedlings grow, and the open wire lets air circulate around trays instead of trapping humidity. Hang a shop light under each shelf and you’ve got a five-tier seed station in a closet footprint. If you’re starting more than one tray, this is the skeleton everything else hangs on.
